What Is CBD Vaping?

‘Vaping’ naturally occuring cannabidiol (CBD) involves inhaling CBD directly into the lungs, typically through a ‘pen style’ or ‘tank style’ vaporizer (vape).

Vaporizer Components
Main vaporizer components | The Aspire 2

Vaporizers are generally composed of four basic components:

The atomizer, powered by the battery, heats up and vaporizes the CBD vape oil or concentrate held inside the chamber. The user then inhales the resulting vapor through the mouthpiece.

And voila! That’s the whole process

Benefits of Vaping CBD

Vaping is an increasingly popular method of taking CBD because it’s an easy, effective and affordable way to deliver its effects.

Using a vaporizer to vape CBD has many benefits over other ways of delivering the molecule (like edibles, CBD tinctures, topical creams or CBD tablets).

Here are five which we’ve found to be the most important:

  1. Convenience and discretion;
  2. Fast-absorption rates
  3. High-bioavailability (more CBD is thought to be absorbed into your bloodstream than through other methods) and therefore can also be more cost-effective;
  4. Free from nicotine and THC;
  5. Customise your dosing on-the-go

1. Convenience and Discretion

Vaping for Convenience

First and foremost, using a vape to take your CBD is hassle-free and discreet and fits easily in your pocket for portability.

CBD vapes are also incredibly easy to use: for ultimate convenience, vape pens need just your charged up battery with a CBD cartridge attached.

Many vape pens even have an autodraw system like the CBD Life UK 10% e-cart, so there’s no need to press any buttons just inhale and vaporization occurs automatically.

Furthermore, the vapour released doesn’t have a distinctive aroma or appearance, and due to the widespread popularity of vaping things like e-cigarettes, it’s unlikely people would ask you about the kind of substance you are inhaling or why you are taking it.

So, vaping avoids the strong odours associated with traditional smoking, and also means you don’t have to take a capsule (or some other form of edible CBD) or use a tincture droplette with others watching.

Overall, vaping CBD is pretty inconspicuous, easy to do on-the-run and can be seamlessly introduced to a daily routine or nutritional regime.

2. Fast-Absorption Rate

Secondly, vaping is one of the fastest-absorbing methods of delivering CBD. The company Leafly reports the effects from vaping CBD set in 30-60 minutes faster than when consuming edibles or taking CBD sublingually (under the tongue).

This is because, when you vape, CBD enters the bloodstream through the vascular tissue in the lungs, bypassing the digestive system. At this point, the CBD molecules are redistributed throughout your body via the bloodstream.

Secondly, vaping is one of the fastest-absorbing methods of delivering CBD. The company Leafly reports the effects from vaping CBD set in 30-60 minutes faster than when consuming edibles or taking CBD sublingually (under the tongue).

On the basis of this fast-acting characteristic, vaping CBD may be well suited to medical conditions with sudden onset symptoms like migraines, anxiety or panic attacks.

The rapid impact of CBD when consumed this way is also closely linked with another key benefit of the vape dosing method higher bioavailability.

3. High-Bioavailability

The term bioavailability has been defined as “a measure of the amount of an administered dose that reaches the bloodstream.”

In other words, it is the degree to which a substance is absorbed into the bloodstream.

For example, only 15% of a substance may reach the bloodstream if absorbed through the gut after eating it, whereas 25% of the substance may be absorbed if taken under the tongue.

CBD Bioavailability

CBD bioavailability is measured as the percentage of cannabidiol that is absorbed into the bloodstream when consuming a CBD product, including CBD vape oil.

This means that vaping can be up to 4 times more efficient than ingesting edible CBD products.

Vaporization of CBD has been shown to offer higher bioavailability than ingestion up to 60%!

This means that when you vape, up to 60% of the CBD is absorbed into the bloodstream.

Other cannabidiol products, such as CBD capsules or CBD gummies, that are taken orally tend to result in absorption levels of only around 15%.

This means that vaping can be up to 4 times more efficient than ingesting edible CBD products.

Therfore, because it is thought that you can achieve the same effects with a smaller amount of CBD, you can also get more bang for your buck!

Needing less product to produce the same results means better value for money, which is especially welcome when CBD can be quite costly for repeat customers.

4. Free From Nicotine and (mostly) THC

Fourth on our list and crucially important, vaping CBD is very different from vaping nicotine or THC.

While the evidence that vaping is far safer than smoking is now overwhelming, that doesn’t mean it is without its risks.

CBD Vape Oil Nicotine Free
CBD Vape Oil is free from Nicotine

Nicotine Addiction

Nicotine is an addictive substance with a range of negative side effects, and so, while vaping e-cigarettes may avoid the inhalation of some toxins associated with smoking tobacco, nicotine remains a problem with e-cig vapes.

This is especially true if you’re a non-smoker and aren’t using vaping as a way to improve your health and reduce your nicotine intake.

Fear Not! CBD Vape Oil Is Nicotine Free!

Vaping CBD instead of regular e-liquid can act as a nicotine-free alternative, and some studies even suggest it may support people to stop or reduce smoking tobacco.

Furthermore, many CBD vape products are THC-free, meaning that you can be safe in the knowledge that it “won’t get you high.”

In the US, ‘Farm Bill’ compliant CBD contains 0.3% or less THC, meaning it won’t get you stoned no matter how much you vape, letting you rest safe in the knowledge that CBD won’t impair your mental clarity.

Vaping CBD instead of regular e-liquid can act as a nicotine-free alternative, and some studies even suggest it may support people to stop or reduce smoking tobacco.

Similar guidelines are enforeced in most other countries where CBD has been legalised too, including the UK.

Having said all this, make sure that you take a look to see if the product you are purchasing comes with a Certificate of Analysis so that you know exactly what you are putting into your body.

A Note on PG and VG

The other two main components of e-liquid and CBD vape oil are known as propylene glycol (PG) and vegetable glycerin (VG).

The information about the effect of these two substances is mixed and the evidence available in 2020 is very conflicting.

However, it is possible that these ingredients could be harmful to users, which is worth bearing in mind if you choose to vape.

The National Academies of Sciences published a book in 2018 on the Public Health Consequences of E-Cigarettes, with a chapter on the toxicology of these ingredients.

There are several CBD vape pens which do not contain either PG or VG, although most CBD vape oils do.

5. Customisability On-The-Go

Finally, vaping CBD also offers the consumer flexibility to customise their dosage as they go, which may be especially attractive to more experienced users.

By considering the concentration of the CBD vape oil in a given cartridge, the desired effect, and other environmental factors, you can adjust your inhalation style and thus the amount of CBD being consumed.

Potency and Effectiveness

There is one major drawback to using diluted CBD e-liquid in a tank or cartridge the “maximum dissolution rate”.

The dissolution rate in the case of CBD means how much CBD is able to be dissolved in a given solution or liquid.

In other words, CBD e-liquid is limited in the percentage of CBD that can be dissolved in it.

However, CBD e-liquids have come a long way, and there are numerous ways to increase their purity, potency and bioavailability without the use of harmful additives.

Natural terpenes from plants other than cannabis can also be added to CBD after extraction

Terpenes are naturally occuring plant compounds that provide flavour and aroma and change how cannabinoids bind to their receptors.

When combined with CBD, terpenes raise bioavailability and are thought to enhance some of its effects.

The increase in bioavailability is thought to come about as terpenes are are lipids (fats), in which CBD dissolves and, therefore is more easily absorbed into the bloodstream.

CBD Concentrates

CBD concentrates are CBD products which have been refined to leave only the most critical selection of plant compounds required in the product.

This means that what you’re left with is a greater proportion of cannabinoids and terpenes. Sounds pretty good to us!

What’s more, PG and VG are not a factor with most concentrates, so you can vape free in the knowledge that what you’ve got is CBD in its purest most potent form.

CBD concentrates are CBD products which have been refined to leave only the most critical selection of plant compounds required in the product.

This means that what you’re left with is a greater proportion of cannabinoids and terpenes. Sounds pretty good to us!

Furthermore, since bioavailability depends on the consumption method and concentration of CBD in the product in question, concentrates derived from strains of cannabis which are naturally higher in CBD can offer greater potency without compromising purity.

CBD Vape Oil Equipment

CBD vaping equipment: tank vs. pen-style vapes, cartridges, concentrate and some examples

The question of which vaping equipment you should use to take your CBD vape oil is becoming increasingly complicated.

This is because of the growing number of CBD brands to buy from, not to mention new methods of taking CBD emerging all the time,

This is one of the most critical reasons why we decided to create CBD Scanner, to help our users find the product which works for them.

There are two main styles of vapes most relevant to vaping CBD.

The most common historically has been the “tank style” vape, where a battery heats up a small disposable cartridge or a refillable container. The other is a pen-style vape, typically used for concentrates like CBD isolate.

Tank-Style Vapes

Tank-style vapes, also known as ‘mechanical vape mods’ or ‘advanced personal vaporizers’, have chunkier vape bodies allowing for large batteries and therefore more power.

This has the knock-on effect of bigger clouds of vapour, a stronger throat-hit, and more juice flavour.

The heating coil, also known as the ‘atomiser,’ is situated in the tank chamber and is coated or filled with nylon, silica or cotton wick, in order to absorb the e-liquid.

Refillable vs Disposable Tanks

Some tank vapes use pre-filled, disposable cartridges these style vapes are known as ‘cartomisers’.

While tank-style vapes using disposable cartridges tend to be cheaper and simpler, the materials used (such as the metal in the coil) may be of questionable quality.

This means there is an increased risk of the coil and wick overheating, leading to degradation over time. This can render the vape useless and potentially dangerous as the user may be exposed to harmful vapour.

While tank-style vapes using disposable cartridges tend to be cheaper and simpler, the materials used (such as the metal in the coil) may be of questionable quality.

While high-quality refillable tank vapes may not be as cheap and easy to use straight from the off, the advantages should be enough to sway you from investing in a cheap alternative.

Do not confuse these disposable tank vapes with Vape Pens and cartridges, which

Highly Customisable Tank-Style Vapes

There are also some more complex, rebuildable tank-style vapes with replaceable heating coils which require greater technical knowledge to operate.

Knowing how to combine various temperature and power settings, coils and tanks can be a barrier to getting started with vaping.

If you already vape, or are looking to invest a lot of time and effort in creating your own unique, perfectly tailored vapes, more power to you!

However, for many of us, this is simply not necessary, which is why we have the following vape recommendation.

The Aspire Breeze 2

Aspire Breeze 2
The Aspire Breeze 2 is a great choice if you’re looking for a refillable tank-style vaporizer ideal for CBD Vape Oil

The Aspire Breeze 2 is a great choice for those looking to get into vaping CBD with a tank-style vaporizer.

If you’re not familiar with vaporizers and are at a loss at which one to purchase, we would recommend this product to get you started.

You can buy this easy to use compact vaporizer at our friends’ over at Bloom Botanics for a very reasonable £24.99.

CBD E-Liquid

Tank style vapes all require e-liquid: a variable mixture of thinning agents, like propylene glycol and vegetable glycerin, flavourings and, in the case of CBD e-liquid, some form of CBD.

Please note that the terms CBD e-liquid and CBD vape oil can be used interchangably! They are the same!

This section, however, is headed e-liquid as we will be focusing on the liquid itself and less on the hardware required to vape it.

For many of us, the main benefit of buying just CBD e-liquid rather than pens and cartridges is as follows:

You only need to buy the e-liquid to replenish your CBD supply rather than any new hardware.

This makes the tank-style vaporizer / CBD e-liquid combination is the most affordable method of taking CBD efficiently.

For those of us who like to take CBD often, you should seriously consider investing in a refillable vape, like the Aspire Breeze 2, and from then on purchasing CBD e-liquid.

This is especially true if price is important to you.

CBD Scanner E-liquid Reviews

There are an untold number of CBD e-liquids to choose from.

If you’re set on purchasing bottles of e-liquid to replenish your refillable vape, it can be incredibly hard to know which to buy.

That’s why we’ve tried to make things a little easier for you with our CBD E-Liquid reviews.

You can find all of our CBD e-liquid reviews below, simply follow the links to read reviews of our carefelly chosen selection.

Pen-Style Vapes

Pen-style vapes, or vape pens, are, predictably, slimmer than their tank-style cousins, and many prefer this more elegant design.

Vape pens may use either CBD concentrates or CBD e-liquids in disposable or refillable cartridges. However, while refillable cartridges are available, many companies in the CBD world focus on providing customers with the convenience of disposable cartirdges.

While pen-style vapes may not have as much power as tank-mods, they are highly portable, can have a decent battery life of up to a full day, and are a simpler option for those of us new to CBD vaping.

Much like with tank-style vaporizers, you will have to replace the heating coil from time to time due to oxidation.

Top tip!

The speed at which the coil breaks down and oxidises can be reduced by using pure CBD isolates without additives.

When oxidation does occur it can result in metal nanoparticles contaminating inhaled vapor.

Be sure to replace your atomiser as needed – replacement atomizers can be purchased online. Make sure you buy the right atomizer for the right vape!

Here is a link to replacement coils for the Aspire Breeze 2 they are not compatible with any other vape!

CBD Vape Pen Kits

When deciding whether to get a pen-style vape that uses disposable cartridges as opposed to a refillable cartridge, it’s worth reiterating that, while somewhat wasteful, disposable cartridges do offer a more straightforward and reliable way to get started.

Moreover, many CBD brands sell pens with pre-filled cartridges as part of all-in-one starter kits (check out the Harmony CBD Vape Pen Kit), and enable you to purchase additional cartridges (like the Harmony CBD Pen Cartridge) in different flavours and terpene profiles.

Most CBD vape pens you can get started with in 3 simple steps:

  1. Charge the pen/battery using the included charger,
  2. Screw a compatible pre-filled CBD vape oil cartridge onto the battery,
  3. Draw through the mouthpiece (note: you may need to press a button on the vape pen in order to release the vapor).

Many vape pen batteries have what’s known as a ‘510-thread’ a universal design widely adopted by manufacturers. They are called ‘510’ because the cartridge tends to be 5mm in length and there are 10 screwheads.

This means that, technically, you can use a 510-thread battery with most standard pre-filled CBD cartridges that conform to these specifications (however, as is the case with Harmony CBD Pen Kit, many manufacturers advise against this).

Overall it’s safe to say that the cheapest disposable vape from the cornershop may not be your best option this is why we’ve reviewed a number of excellent CBD vape pens you might want to consider:

Vaping CBD vs Other Means

Vaping vs Oral Consumption

Compared with orally consumed products like CBD capsules, edibles and drinks, vaping has several clear advantages.

Most importantly, vaping CBD avoids the “first-pass effect”.

When you ingest CBD edibles the CBD has to be processed by the liver before it begins circulating in your blood.

During this time, the liver will actively reduce the amount of CBD that is released into your bloodstream, either through absorption or through chemical breakdown by liver enzymes.

Lower quantity of organic CBD compounds in your bloodstream means lower bioavailability, and a lower level of effect.

While some put the bioavailability of edibles at a generous 15%, historical studies have found it to be as low as 6% (1986) or between 4-20% (2009).

Foria founder Matthew Gerson comments that it’s possible to achieve “greater efficacy for products that otherwise have to pass through your digestive system and go through all the stomach acid, and take time to metabolize.”

Even if bioavailability from vaping is said to be as low as 40%, this is still a significant improvement on ingestion.

Vaping vs Sublingual Absorption (Under The Tongue)

Sublingually consumed CBD products like drops and sprays are thought to fair better than oral consumption in terms of bioavailability (12-35%). However, this is still significantly lower than vaping (min. 40%).

The perceived benefits of CBD have been widely reported, and there is still so much to uncover before we start to know the exact effect of the substance on humans.

Much can also be said about the risks of vaping, with mixed reports of its potential health implications.

That being said, some arguments have been made concerning the potential risks of polyethylene and propylene glycol, which are often used as thinning-agents in CBD cartridge e-liquids.

The method by which CBD oil is extracted from the hemp plant is another potential risk factor, which can again be reduced by choosing brands who use the latest and safest process of CO2 extraction, bypassing the risks presented by solvents used in other extraction processes.

Another potential risk identified is the presence of herbicides and pesticides in CBD products, however this is more easily overcome by choosing brands like Foria, fourfive, Kanaswiss, The Original Alternative and Hempura, with pesticide-free and herbicide-free, third-party tested ingredients and cultivation processes.

The presence on independent 3rd-party testing, as practised by the previously mentioned brands, also aid in reducing the misrepresentation of cannabinoid concentration and composition in products.

It is widely known that many CBD producers have been found guilty of misrepresenting exactly what is in their products, and it what amounts.

That’s why it’s of vital importance that you purchase your CBD from trusted, transparent brands.

We at CBD Scanner aim to only feature brands that are trustworthy and legitimate. If there is some doubt, we try to mention this in our brand reviews.

Is It Worth the Risks?

Non-smokers interested in vaping CBD should be relatively cautious about the health risks.

At the same time, vaping is widely accepted to be far safer than smoking cigarettes, especially considering the fact that when vaping CBD products, no addictive nicotine is present in the liquid.

Before You Vape!

CBD Oils and Tinctures are made specifically to be ingested orally and can be harmful if used in a vaporizer.

Make sure the product you are vaping was specifically made for vaping devices.

It is difficult to define appropriate doses of CBD due to insufficient high-quality evidence in human studies.

Cannabidiol, or CBD, is a type of cannabinoid — more specifically a ‘phytocannabinoid’ — that can be extracted from the hemp plant.

CBD interacts with receptors in the endocannabinoid system (ECS) and in this way can directly influence areas of the body regulated by that system.

Research on the potential health benefits of cannabidiol (as well as non-cannabinoid molecules like terpenes), and in particular the use of vapes as a method of administering them, is growing but remains inconclusive.

Is CBD Vape Oil Right For You?

Scientists continue to study the long-term effects of vaping.

While we wait for their research and for regulations to catch up with new technology, the technology is too new to say definitively that it’s completely safe with total certainty.

Whether or not vaping is right for you, CBD is always an option.

Now that you know more about vaping, you can make a more informed decision.

Still, it’s important to continue with more research.

If you can’t find much information on a product, that is a huge red flag!

Don’t buy it!

If you find a brand or product that you like, be sure to take a look at CBD Scanner’s library of independent reviews to check that everything is as it seems.
